The sun setting in the West symbolizes the end, not of life, but of samsara, delusion, and suffering.  It is the direction of Dewachen, Sukhavati, the Land of Peace and Bliss, of Boundless Life and Light.

The Pure Land is not a physical location; it is the state of non-retrogression in which we become certain of our Buddha Nature, where every experience reminds us of equality and interdependence, and all phenomena turn our minds to the Dharma. —TN
