False or Genuine

If your faith is small and your cleverness is great, you are a false teacher.

If you have many listeners and your self-regard is high, you are a false spiritual friend.

If you presume of superior qualities and have not taken the Dharma to heart, you are a false leader.

If you give oral instructions and do not practice them yourself, you are a foolish “expert.”

If you are fond of senseless babble and lack the Dharma in your heart, you are a craving charlatan yogi.

If you have little learning and lack the oral instructions, you are a a commoner, though your faith may be great.

If you are a genuine practitioner who acts in accordance with the true teachings, liberate yourself with intelligence, tame your mind with faith, cut misconceptions by listening to teachings, cast away social concerns, mingle your mind with the Dharma, perfect your knowledge with learning and reflecting, settle your mind with the oral instructions, and gain final certainty through the view and meditation. That, however, is difficult.

—Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava
