Essence, Cause & Function

maitreya3Attachment, aversion, and indifference are the affective obscurations; their cause is grasping at the existence of a personal self: and their function is to prevent liberation from cyclic birth and death.

Notions of subject, action, and object are the cognitive obscurations; their cause is grasping at the existence of phenomena; and their function is to prevent complete perfect enlightenment.
