Self & Selves, Phenomena & Characteristics

Related imageThose who, for only a second, give rise to a pure and clear confidence upon hearing these words of the Tathagata, the Tathagata sees and knows them, and they will attain immeasurable happiness because of this understanding. Why?

Because they are not caught up in the idea of me, the self, other selves, or phenomenal existence. They are not caught up in the idea of a phenomenon or the idea of the absence of phenomena. They are not caught up in the notion that this is a characteristic and that is not a characteristic. Why?

If we are caught up in the idea of phenomena, we are also caught up in the ideas of me, the self, other selves, or phenomenal existence. If we are caught up in the idea that there are no phenomena, we are still caught up in the ideas of me, the self, other selves, or phenomenal existence.

That is why we should not get caught up in the notion of phenomena or in the notion of the absence of phenomena.
