Lay Disciples

25659651_2119214071698476_1638623675684502563_nInasmuch as lay disciples develop faith, and motivate others to develop faith;

cultivate virtue, and motivate others to cultivate virtue;

are generous, and motivate others to be generous;

are desirous of meeting with teachers, and motivate others to meet with teachers;

are desirous of hearing the true Dharma, and motivate others to hear the true Dharma;

are habitually mindful of the Dharma that is heard, and motivate others to be mindful of the Dharma;

ascertain the benefit of the Dharma that is heard, and motivate others to ascertain the benefit;

having known the benefit, having known the Dharma, are committed to practicing the Dharma, and motivate others to commit to practicing the Dharma;

in that way, lay followers are engaged in their own welfare and in others’ welfare.

—Buddha Shakyamuni, Mahanama Sutra
