Killing

one abstains from the taking of life.

One dwells with the rod laid down,

the knife laid down, scrupulous, merciful,

trembling with compassion for the welfare of all living beings.

 One must not directly kill a sentient being; encourage others to kill; kill by expedient means; praise killing; rejoice at killing; curse to die; nor create the causes, conditions, methods, or karma of killing.
