before there developed the state of being a Buddha, by understanding,
or that of an ordinary sentient being, by lack of understanding,
or the existence of both, there is Samantabhadra, Immutable Light,
who spontaneously realizes Buddhahood.
He is like a rainbow in the sky, a sheer luminosity,
and hence not something eternally non-existent,
an utter insubstantiality,
and hence not something eternally existent.
He is the ultimate primeval source of all and everything.
In having become the ground of all and everything,
He remains an unlimited vastness without partition
and exists spontaneously in inseparability.
