Do Not Forget

KDSG tibDo not forget the Lama

Pray to him at all times.

Do not forget death.

Persist in the Dharma.

Do not be carried away by thoughts.

Watch the nature of mind.

Do not forget sentient beings.

With compassion, dedicate all merit to them.

—Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

    Hello,
I’ve been enjoying the daily messages & find them uplifting. Today’s message has me confused though.
In Buddhism, there is no deity to pray to, but this passage states, “Do not forget the lama. Pray to him daily.” Please explain. Thank you.
    Namaste

Thank you for your kind words. The Lama is the teacher. In the beginning, we externalize the teacher as an individual who provides instruction, but gradually we come to understand that the teacher is internal –our own Buddha Nature, and the external teacher is just a vehicle for learning. In Buddhism, to pray is to constantly remember, not to ask for gifts.
