Sudden Enlightenment

ancient-lampWhether a cave has been dark for one minute or a thousand years, ​​the moment you bring in a lamp, darkness is vanquished. In a sense, then, all enlightenment is sudden.

However, that sudden enlightenment requires causes and conditions.​ The lamp must be found, it must be lit, and it must be carried into the dark cave.​

Just as in the simile of bringing a lamp into a dark cave, enlightenment has a cause (Buddha Nature), and conditions (purification of wrong views and afflicted emotions through the accumulation of merit and wisdom). The recognition of the cause and the gathering of the conditions are necessarily gradual.

    Tashi, I’m wondering…when we say ‘suddenly’ about anything, does that imply a lack of attention to relationship between cause and effect? Or is it a result of our view being narrow and shallow?

      It is a perception, and it is not necessarily wrong. It just means that the causes and conditions have fructified in this moment, even if their accumulation has taken a long time.
