The Origin of Ignorance

pesadillaWhile sleeping, we may experience nightmares. We may dream of a monster that pursues us. We feel afraid. To solve this problem, there is no use in determining where the monster came from, or its origin. What is important is to awaken from the nightmare. As we awaken, we realize that the monster never really existed. It was a mental creation.

Similarly, ignorance has no reality —it is not substantial independent, and permanent. As we awaken from the nightmare of ignorance (Buddha means ‘awake’), we realize that all the monsters that we have mentally generated —attachment, aversion, indifference, and karma— are not real. They do not come from anywhere. They are merely mental creations. Waking up is enough!

And sadly, we can waste so much of our lives trying to outrun the monsters…instead of just waking up!
