There Is An Unborn

goldenbudThere is an unborn, unbecome, unmade, unconditioned.

If there were no unborn, unbecome, unmade, unconditioned,

no escape would be discerned from what is born, become, made, conditioned.

But because there is an unborn, unbecome, unmade, unconditioned,

therefore an escape is discerned from what is born, become, made, conditioned.

—Buddha Shakyamuni, Ud. 8.3, 80-81

The Buddha was not a nihilist. He is stating clearly here, for those who believe that there is no ultimate reality, that indeed there is. However, that ultimate reality can berst be described in negative terms: unborn, unbecome, unmade, unconditioned.
