Determination (pranidhana) is the voluntary undertaking of vows. Although there are various levels of vows in Dharma practice, the perfection of determination (pranidhana paramita) refers specifically to the definitive vows that Great Bodhisattvas (Mahasattvas) make upon receiving the prophecy of their imminent enlightenment, such as those made by Samantabhadra, Bhaisajyaguru, Ksitigarbha, and Amideva.

However, along the way to enlightenment, we can develop our capacity for determination by voluntarily accepting various traditional sets of vows:

  • Refuge Vows
  • Five Precepts
  • Monastic Ordination Vows
  • Essential Bodhisattva Vows
  • Eight Mahayana Vows
  • Bodhisattva Ordination Vows
  • Samaya Vows
  • Mahasattva Vows
