External objects, persons, or situations will never make us happy. Wealth, beauty, power, fame, and worldly knowledge will not make us happy. The rich, the beautiful, the powerful, the famous, and the learned also suffer.

Renouncing the objects of desire will not bring happiness either. If that were true, the poor, the ugly, the oppressed, the infamous, and the ignorant would be happy.

The middle way is to renounce the false belief that the objects of our craving will make us happy.
