Dark Moon Protector Practice

Samaya Tara Sadhana

May what I’m about to do yield favorable results.

May it give me the capacity to benefit others.

May it help me overcome ignorance and limitation.

May it clear away all obstacles on the path.

May it lead me to the union of wisdom and compassion.

 May I accomplish my own benefit, the benefit of others, and Great Benefit.


With the wish to free all beings, I go for refuge

to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha

until all reach full Enlightenment.

Enthused by wisdom and compassion,

today, in the presence of the Awakened,

I generate Great Purpose for the benefit of all.

As long as space endures, as long as sentient beings remain,

may I also remain and dispel all their suffering.

om Reverence to the Primordial Buddha.

 om Reverence to the Buddha Shakyamuni.

om Reverence to the Buddha Maitreya.

om Reverence to Superior Nagarjuna.

om Reverence to Superior Asanga and the Noble Vasubandhu.

om Reverence to the Omniscient Dolpopa and the Noble Taranatha.

om Reverence to all the Glorious Lamas of the Great Middle Way.

om Reverence to the Pure Dharma of Definitive Meaning.

Residing in the unborn expanse of reality,

inseparable from the Pure Bodies of Truth, Glory, and Compassion,

are the Lamas of the Lineage of Definitive Meaning,

the awareness of my own true nature.

Acceptance of Natural Perfection is my unconditional prostration.

I make extensive offerings without concepts of giving and receiving.

 I confess all unskillful actions and abandoned commitments

and rejoice in the complete transcendence of the cycle of suffering.

Please turn the Three Wheels of Dharma!

 I pray that You remain in Your unchanging nature

and dedicate all accumulations of merit to Great Benefit.

Omniscient Jonangpa, You embody the blessings of the Body, Speech, and Mind

of the Buddhas of the three times and ten directions.

You are the Lord of the Ocean of Definitive Meaning,

the wisdom emanation of the Buddha Amideva,

and the loving glance of the Lord of Compassion and the Mother of Mercy.

I pray to You, my precious Lama. Peerless Dolpopa, regard me with affection!


Glorious Lamas of the Lineage of the Sons and Daughters of the Protector,

please allow me to enter and abide in the palace of the Unequaled Yogini!

Dark green and exceedingly wrathful,

with one face, three eyes, and eight hands,

You are ever ready to protect the Great Middle Way.

 Adorned with a tiara of five skulls,

with gold earrings, and bracelets and anklets of bone,

You wear a necklace of freshly severed heads,

and a lower garment of tiger skin about Your waist.

Your four right hands hold a lotus tipped arrow,

a double-sided drum, a curved knife, and the gesture of giving.

Your left hands hold a lotus with the stem against Your heart,

a bow of flowers, a trident, and a blood-filled cup.

The staff of renunciation rests against Your precious shoulder.

On a sun disc and multi-colored lotus seat,

Your right leg pendant, Your foot resting on a blossom,

You are surrounded by the brightly burning flames of pristine wisdom.

 Over Your crown is the primordial Buddha Vajradhara,

holding scepter and bell crossed at the heart.

At His left is Mahasiddha Buddha Gupta, and on His right sits Jetsun Taranatha,

the right hand in the gesture of blessing at the heart.

You expand as Blue Tara, subduing all,

holding an upraised sword and mounted on a buffalo.

You expand as Red Tara, attracting all,

holding a goad and mounted on a horse.

You expand as White Tara, pacifying all,

holding a lotus blossom and mounted on a swan.

You expand as Yellow Tara, increasing all,

holding a vase of plenty and mounted on an elephant.

 Merciful Mother and Protector, all glory and victory to You!


Merciful Mother, Dispeller of Fear, grant me Your protection!

Sustain my practice with Your Mighty Forms,

that the pure stream of Your Force may flow within me

in this world and the worlds to come.

Protect and sustain the Pure Dharma of Definitive Meaning!

Protect and sustain the Great Middle Way!

Subdue all hindrances and pacify obstructers!

Make my way straight, that I may swiftly accumulate vast wisdom and compassion

and attain the Great Purpose!


By the merit accrued through all my virtuous acts,

May all be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.

May all embrace happiness and the causes of happiness.

May all abide in peace, free from self-grasping.

May all attain the union of wisdom and compassion.

      Many thanks for this. Do you have the location of the Tibetan source? Are there any instructions to accompany the practice?

        This simple practice was developed by Jetsun Taranatha. As with every practice, the instruction is to (1) know what we’re doing before doing it, (2) pay exclusive attention to it while doing it, and (3) dedicate the merit at the end. Nothing else is required.
